Zimbabwean born Mutambe’s first job was as a cellar hand in one of the biggest cellars there – Mukuyu Winery. “For two years it was just a job to me,” says Mutambe, “but then I started tasting wines. Now wine is a complete passion for me. I think I was destined to be in the wine industry, and being a sommelier is not a job at all; it’s my lifestyle.”
Mutambe comes to the Vineyard Hotel & Spa from Johannesburg, where he trained and worked at Signature restaurant. Now, after just two months in the mother city, he’s settled into Cape Town’s rhythm – and has lots in store for the hotel. “I have some fantastic plans for the Vineyard, so that when people think wine, they know the Vineyard Hotel & Spa and particularly our Square Restaurant & Sushi Bar is the place to go.”
Apart from the Square’s gourmet food and wine evenings running in partnership with renowned Cape wine estates, Mutambe says it’s also important to appreciate smaller, lesser-known estates. “So on Monday nights from 6 to 7pm, we will be hosting complimentary wine tastings for our resident guests and loyal public clientele, to expose them to the Cape’s boutique estates – the winemaker from each estate will co-host the event too. I really would like wine lovers to become aware of what is available to them, and at the same time I’d like to contribute to and improve our existing wine list.”
As resident sommelier at the Vineyard, Mutambe is tasked with assisting diners to pair wines perfectly with the specific courses of their meal. “It is important to give an informed recommendation to your guest,” he says. “Without pushing your own preferences, you have to listen to and read people’s likes, because everyone is different.”
Personally, Mutambe prefers reds – particularly Pinot Noir – but says he recommends white wines just as easily. “The rule that white wine should accompany white meat, and red wine should be drunk with red meat does not apply for me. There is no reason not to pair Pinot Noir with fish, because pairing is really about the wine and food complementing and supporting each other so that the meal is harmonious.”
Mutambe also gives recommendations on champagnes, brandies, cognacs, and even beer. “Not everyone drinks wine,” he says. “I can suggest something for everyone, even for guests who don’t drink alcohol.”
Next year Mutambe will commence the respected Cape Wine Masters programme, and admits he hopes he never stops learning. In the meantime, he’s also sharing his knowledge with the Vineyard’s staff “through training and awareness, so that staff also understand wine and can answer questions from guests when I am not there”.
It is Mutambe’s hope that the wildly popular gourmet food and wine evenings will continue beyond the current programme ending in October. This exuberant and energetic sommelier plans to introduce wine and food appreciation at the Vineyard on as many different levels as possible – and to as many people as he can. After all, for Gregory Mutambe, wine is life.

Established in 1986, Hostex celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2011 and will be pulling out all the stops to bring the best-ever hospitality trade exhibition to Gauteng from 13 to 16 March next year.
As the longest-running trade exhibition of its kind in southern Africa, Hostex has become an institution that sees over 11 000 visitors descending on Sandton Convention Centre over four days to source products and services from over 250 exhibitors.
“We recently commissioned an independent research company to provide insights into how we’re doing and whether Hostex is still meeting the needs of both exhibitors and visitors, and are delighted to report that the answer is an overwhelming yes,” says Lynn Chamier, exhibition director of Hostex.
Research conducted by a leading independent marketing research company shows that:
• exhibitors are extremely satisfied with Hostex in its current form
• they value exhibitions as an important medium in their marketing communications mix with certain smaller exhibitors building their marketing plan around the event
• it is valued as a unique showcase for the hospitality and catering industries. This role is enhanced through what exhibitors see as a well-run show at a suitable venue that delivers a quality audience.
• its greatest value to trade visitors is that it facilitates an opportunity to network with other stakeholders in the hospitality industry and enables updating on the latest industry developments.
Far from resting on its laurels, the exhibition will offer more to see and do than ever before, with exciting new features aimed at attracting decision-makers to the show. The anchor attractions at Hostex Gauteng 2011 include:
• Gauteng’s first-ever Greenstuff Village and Green Boutique Hotel, a showcase of suppliers of green products and services, alongside an exhibit consisting of a series of rooms typically found in a hotel, furnished, equipped, serviced and operated from floor to ceiling with only eco-friendly products listed in the Hotelstuff directory.
• The Hospitality Emporium, a vibrant mix of niche and SME product and service providers.
• Incorporated in the Hospitality Emporium is the Wine Circle, an exclusive exhibit of some of South Africa’s leading wine estates, with wine-tasting and a central seating area to allow for sourcing of wines while networking in a relaxed environment.
• The SA Chefs Village, featuring more non-stop culinary action, demonstrations and competitions aimed at food-lovers and chefs across all levels than ever before.
• The search is on to find the best pizza in South Africa in the third annual Global Pizza Challenge.

Offering sophisticated country hospitality, Le Grand Hall has a wonderful indoor-outdoor flow for entertaining guests against the majestic backdrop of the Drakenstein mountain range. So much more than a blank canvas, the light, bright space is not unlike a modern art gallery with an elegant and distinctive decorative style defined by the Sogors’ eye-catching, contemporary paintings arranged as a series of panels in reflection to the overall architectural concept.

Expertly designed to be stylish, comfortable and functional, the ballroom-style space has a dedicated, highly experienced, in-house event management team to create and choreograph every aspect of a function. From innovative menus using the best of the estate’s fresh produce paired to award-winning estate wines to the dedicated service team smartly attired in Allée Bleue’s signature blue, Le Grand Hall offers sophisticated refinement, generous hospitality and a comprehensive range of services. Along with personalised service comes the advantage of being on a farm – there are no cut-off times or music regulations, so guests can dance the night away.
